this was 4 years ago, so it was well before any of the nasty stuff had started.

plus, this is Agadez, in Niger, so, no French intervention.

no rebels at the time when I was there (except for Tuareg nationalist rebels, but they're secular).

and yes, it's one of the coolest places on earth.
